As a teacher, I believe one of the most important skills I can help my students develop is how to think for themselves. In a world of screens, scrolling, and endless information, its easy to be told what to think, I want my students to know how to think.
In my classroom, we'll talk about what we read, watch, and learn. We'll ask questions, dig deeper, and practice forming our own ideas. I want my students to feel confident thinking critically about the world around them, whether its a book, a piece of history, or even a YouTube video that made them curious.
I also want to cultivate curiosity and creativity. Kids today are surrounded by technology, but I believe we can use it to inspire imagination, rather than replace it. I love incorporating educational videos, virtual field trips, and interactive online games to make lessons and learning come alive.
My classroom will have lots of group work and projects. I believe students learn best when they can share ideas and work together. I enjoy having students collaborate, build, and create something as a team rather than work alone.
Some activities I'm most excited for this year:
Interactive History Days:
We'll dress up and role-play historic moments or explore famous sites through digital tours. Lets step into history together!
Mini Book Clubs:
This year, students will choose between:
The Chronicles of Narnia By C.S. Lewis,
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan,
or our "Rotational Club", which will explore a new stand-alone book each month. Each day, students will have dedicated time for independent reading within their club, and at the end of the month, they’ll meet to discuss the book. To celebrate at the end of the year, every club will recreate their favorite scene from one of their books!
Ecosystem Engineers Project:
Students will team up to design their own ecosystem or habitat, creating a physical model or digital version that shows how plants and animals interact and survive in their biome. It’s a hands-on project that combines science, creativity, and teamwork!
